XSave field guide

Saving social videos, thoughtfully.

A practical reference for deciding when a download is appropriate, choosing a useful file quality, and understanding why a public video link may not work.

Reviewed October 9, 2026

Social apps are designed for watching and sharing inside their own services. Sometimes you also need an offline copy: for example, to keep your own original, preserve material you have permission to use, or view a clip when you will be away from a reliable connection. A link being visible to the public does not, by itself, give everyone permission to copy, republish, or commercially use the video.

Start with permission, not the download button

Videos can contain several kinds of protected material at once: the recording, music, artwork, a person’s likeness, and a creator’s captions or edits. The uploader may not own every element in the post. Before saving or using a copy, check the creator’s stated terms and the rules that apply where you live.

A personal offline copy and a public repost are different uses, but neither is automatically allowed in every location or situation. When in doubt, ask the rights holder or do not download.

Choose the quality that fits the job

Resolution describes the dimensions of the image, not the whole viewing experience. The original upload, compression, lighting, motion, and screen size all matter. A higher resolution setting cannot restore detail that was absent from the source.

Best available

Choose this for archiving a permitted copy or viewing on a larger screen. It may take longer and use more storage, and the result is still limited by the source video.

720p

A practical middle ground for many phones, laptops, and presentations. It can reduce file size when the original is high resolution, but does not improve a low-resolution source.

480p

Useful when storage or data transfer matters more than fine detail, such as a small mobile screen. Expect visible softness on a large display.

Vertical and square videos are normally meant to stay in their original aspect ratio. If a player shows black bars, that is often preferable to stretching or cropping the picture. Keep the downloaded file’s original dimensions unless you have a specific editing reason to change them.

Why platform links behave differently

Each service changes its link formats, playback rules, and creator controls over time. A URL that opens a post in your browser may still be unavailable to an external processing service. Check the platform’s current help and terms before relying on a particular workflow.

X

Post links commonly include a status identifier. Confirm that the post itself still opens and plays; a profile link or search page is not the same as a video post. See X Help.

Instagram

Reels and feed videos may have different creator and audience settings. Public visibility does not mean the creator has licensed the video for reuse. See the Instagram Help Center.

Facebook

Video availability can depend on the post audience, page settings, and whether the post remains online. Use only links you are allowed to access and save. See the Facebook Help Center.

TikTok

Creators can control whether their videos may be downloaded, and availability may vary by account or region. Respect those settings and use TikTok’s built-in options where available. See TikTok Support.

Troubleshoot a link that will not process

The link is rejected

Copy the URL from the individual video or post page, not a profile, hashtag, search result, or shortened redirect. Make sure the address bar shows the expected platform and that the post opens normally.

The post is private, removed, or asks you to sign in

An external service may not be able to access it. Do not change privacy settings or share credentials just to force a download. Ask the creator for a permitted file or use an official export option.

The video plays but processing fails

Source sites can temporarily rate-limit requests or change how their pages work. Wait and try once more later; repeated rapid retries are unlikely to help. If the post is available through an official download feature, use that instead.

The saved video looks blurry or has no sound

Check the source in the platform first. Some posts are uploaded at low resolution, and some audio may be unavailable or separately licensed. Selecting a higher output setting cannot recreate missing pixels or audio.

Protect your privacy and device

Only submit a link you are comfortable sending to the service. XSave sends the submitted video URL and quality selection to its processing API; see the Privacy Policy for analytics, providers, and temporary-file handling. Avoid submitting links that reveal sensitive personal information or content you are not authorized to access.

After downloading, use your browser’s normal downloads list to locate the file. Be cautious with unexpected file extensions, pop-ups, and third-party pages that ask you to install software, browser extensions, or provide social account credentials. A video download should not require your platform password.

Using XSave

For a public post you are allowed to save, open the matching platform downloader, paste the individual post URL, and choose an available quality. If XSave cannot process it, use the troubleshooting steps above or the platform’s own options. XSave is an independent service and is not affiliated with X, Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok.

Common questions

Does public mean copyright-free?

No. Public access describes who can view a post; it does not grant a reuse license. Check the creator’s permission, applicable law, and platform terms.

Will a higher quality setting make the source sharper?

No. The output cannot contain more source detail than the original upload. A higher setting may only preserve more of the quality already present.

Why can I watch a video but not download it?

Playback access and download availability are separate. Privacy settings, creator controls, platform changes, or temporary limits can prevent processing. Do not try to bypass those controls.
